Red Bulls’ Matt Miazga heading to Chelsea on $5M transfer

Matt Miazga may be on the brink of his European dream.

An ESPN report Wednesday said the Red Bulls’ center back was to be transferred to Chelsea of the English Premier League within 24 hours. The transfer will be for $5 million, according to the Daily Mail. Because Miazga has a Polish passport, he won’t have to obtain a work permit, an issue that has previously complicated moves to England for American players.

Sports Illustrated reported that Miazga would remain with Chelsea for the rest of the Premier League season and not go on loan until at least this summer.

Miazga, 20, was with the U.S. national team in Carson, Calif., for January training camp, but reportedly left for England to take a medical exam. He made his senior U.S. debut during a World Cup qualifier in November after playing at the U-20 World Cup in the spring and U-23 Olympic qualifying in autumn. With one year left on his contract and the sides unable to agree on an extension, Miazga could have been lost to the Red Bulls for nothing if they didn’t transfer him.

The Clifton, N.J., native has never shied away from expressing his desire to one day play in Europe to test himself at the highest level. Several English clubs have been among his suitors for several years. Miazga told the Daily News in November that Leicester City, currently atop the Premier League table, was among those teams.

Miazga began the 2015 MLS season not even guaranteed a spot in the Red Bulls’ starting lineup. An injury to Ronald Zubar in the first game of the season vaulted Miazga into the lineup, and he quickly established himself as one of the best defenders in the league.
